Syros
Ermoupoli, neoclassical pearl of the Aegean

Administrative capital of the Cyclades, Syros surprises with its elegance and its singularity. Ermoupoli, with its Italianate squares, its opera house and its hilltops crowned by Catholic and Orthodox churches, resembles no other Greek island. A cultural journey of unexpected richness.

What makes Syros unique

Ermoupoli was the premier port of Greece in the 19th century, and that prosperity left a remarkable architectural heritage: Miaoulis Square with its Venetian proportions, the Apollon Theatre (a miniature replica of La Scala in Milan), neoclassical mansions with pastel facades. At the summit of the twin hills, the quarters of Ano Syros (Catholic) and Vrodado (Orthodox) bear witness to a religious coexistence unique in Greece. The loukoumia of Syros, rose-water-scented confections, accompany coffee in the traditional pastry shops. The wilder north of the island offers lovely coastal walks.

When to visit Syros

Syros lives year-round, which sets it apart from most of the Cyclades. Spring and autumn are ideal for strolling through Ermoupoli and exploring the island on foot. Combine with Tinos or Mykonos, both close by. Browse all our trips in the Cyclades.
