Ithaca
In the footsteps of Odysseus

Homeland of Odysseus, Ithaca carries within it all the poetry of the Odyssey. But beyond the myth, this discreet island of the Ionian Islands captivates with its preserved beauty: wooded hills, secret coves, villages where life flows with a soothing slowness. A place where you arrive as a traveller and leave a little bit a poet.

What makes Ithaca unique

Ithaca is an island of intimacy. Vathy, the main port, is one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the Mediterranean: an amphitheatre of tile-roofed houses reflected in calm waters. The entire island can be explored on trails shaded by cypresses, leading from hamlet to hamlet between whitewashed chapels and panoramas over the sea. The Spring of Arethusa and the Cave of the Nymphs, linked to the Homeric epic, add a literary dimension to every walk. Far from mass tourism, Ithaca offers tavernas where the fisherman of the morning is also the cook of the evening, and peaceful evenings lulled by the lapping of the harbour. Its neighbour Kefalonia, visible from the heights, is accessible in just a few minutes by ferry.

When to visit Ithaca

From May to June and September to October, Ithaca reveals the best of itself: walkable trails, welcoming sea and absolute serenity. Autumn is particularly gentle here, ideal for an unhurried immersion. Browse all our destinations on the Ionian Islands page.
