Walking holidays in Greece: island to island, at your own pace
A walking holiday in Greece is first of all a simple promise: to walk just enough to earn the evening terrace, the glass of local wine and the swim in a cove where the water stays mild until October. At Kelifos, a Greece specialist for more than forty years, we put together walking trips designed for travellers who like to take their time: paths chosen for their beauty more than for their length, charming hotels booked in advance, and your luggage travelling without you from one stage to the next. You have only to follow the path, and let yourself be surprised.

| In brief | Walking trips in Greece, self-guided or guided, where comfort and flavours count as much as the landscape |

Why walk in Greece with Kelifos
Greece is wonderfully discovered on foot. The paths there are ancient, often paved since antiquity, and they link stone villages, isolated chapels and beaches the car cannot reach. But walking far from home implies an organisation you would rather entrust to somebody else. That is exactly what we do for you.
Self-guided or guided, as you wish. On a self-guided trip, you set off as a couple or with friends, route notes in hand, and you decide each morning what your programme will be. On a guided trip, an English-speaking leader walks with you in a small group, shares their anecdotes and their good addresses, and adapts the pace to everyone. In both cases, the trip stays accessible, even if you have never walked much.
Your luggage is waiting on arrival. You walk light, with a simple daypack. Your cases travel by road or by boat and meet you in your room in the evening. It is this detail that changes everything: you enjoy the path without carrying a thing.
Charming hotels, chosen one by one. We favour family guest houses, small hotels with character facing the harbour, the addresses where they recognise you by the second evening. The table counts as much as the room: fish just caught, vegetables from the garden, olive oil from next door.
Route notes that think of everything. For self-guided trips, you receive detailed notes, with a guidance app, the itineraries scouted metre by metre, the ferry timetables, our teams' favourite finds. You never search for your way, you look at the landscape.
Guaranteed departures and real Greek expertise. Our guided trips leave on fixed dates, in small groups, and most are confirmed as soon as the first bookings come in. Behind every itinerary there is fieldwork on the ground and the fine knowledge of a Greece specialist that offers only the islands and regions it truly loves.
Where to go: our walking holidays region by region
Greece cannot be summed up by a postcard. Each region has its character, its light, its cooking. Here is how we have divided it up for you.
Crete, generous terroir and wild south coast
The largest of the Greek islands deserves that you linger. In the south, the White Mountains plunge into the Libyan Sea, the fishing villages live slowly, and the gorges keep their coolness even in high summer. Self-guided, the trip Crete, island of wonders takes you from Chania to the lagoon of Elafonissi, at your own pace, over twelve days. In a small group, Crete, the fantastic voyage adds the dimension of the Minoan palace and the pleasure of a guide who tells the island's story. To pick up other ideas, browse our Crete hub.

The Cyclades, white light and kalderimia
Cubic houses, bougainvillea, stone paths that have linked the villages for centuries: the Cyclades are the image of Greece we keep. Fertile Naxos and wild Amorgos marry wonderfully in the self-guided trip Naxos and Amorgos, ten days between valleys and cliffs. On the guided side, Sifnos, Milos and Kimolos takes you to three confidential islands, from the volcanic rocks of Sarakiniko to the deserted beaches of Kimolos. The whole archipelago awaits you from the Cyclades hub.

The Ionian Islands, olive trees and emerald sea
To the west, the mood changes. Greener, more Italian, scented with jasmine, the Ionian archipelago lends itself to gentle walks beneath century-old olive trees. The self-guided trip Corfu, the Emerald Isle ranges out from the bay of Liapades, between coves and Venetian villages. In the guided version, Corfu and Paxos adds little Paxos and its miniature harbours, for the length of a ferry crossing. The Ionian Islands hub gathers our trip ideas on this side of Greece.

The Peloponnese, ancient sites and stone villages
For those who dream as much of walking as of history, the Peloponnese is self-evident. There you come across Mycenae, Epidaurus and its theatre with perfect acoustics, then the Arcadian villages and the coves of the Gulf of Messenia. The self-guided road trip Ancient beauties of the Peloponnese links these wonders over ten days as a self-drive tour, hire car and route notes in hand. The Peloponnese hub completes the picture.

Still hesitating between the regions? Our guide to choosing the Greek island that suits you and all our walking trips in Greece will help you decide according to your wishes.
When to go, and at what pace
Greece on foot is savoured in spring and autumn. From April to June, the paths cover themselves in flowers, the temperatures are ideal for walking, and the sea warms up gently. From September to October, the golden light of the late season, a sea still warm and villages recovered in calm compose perhaps the finest period. Summer remains possible on the islands swept by the meltemi, provided you walk early in the morning and set the afternoon aside for swimming. To settle your dates, our guide to when to visit Greece sets out each month.
As for the pace, nothing intimidating. Our walking days last a few hours, punctuated by pauses, a table in the shade, a swim. The paths are gentle, never a race, and each stage leaves time to wander in a village or to linger on a terrace. It is a journey made on a human scale, at the speed of a conversation.
Ready to go?
The hardest part, in the end, is choosing your region. Let yourself be guided by the light of the Cyclades, the terroir of Crete, Ionian gentleness or the history of the Peloponnese. Browse all our walking trips in Greece, choose your island, and prepare to come home with the taste of salt on your lips and the urge to go back.
Frequently asked questions about walking in Greece
Guided or self-guided walking: how do you choose?
It all depends on the experience you are after. On a self-guided trip, you walk as a couple or with friends, you decide each morning what your day will be and you keep the evenings for yourselves. On a guided trip, an English-speaking leader walks with your small group, tells the story of the villages and shares their good addresses. Self-guided appeals to independent travellers who like to improvise; the guided trip reassures those who prefer to be carried along and to make pleasant acquaintances. In both cases, the organisation, the hotels and the transport of your luggage stay in our hands.
Which Greek island or region should you choose for walking?
Each region has its temperament. Crete offers cool gorges and a south coast that has stayed wild; the Cyclades unroll their stone paths between white villages and coves; the Ionian Islands appeal through their olive trees and their emerald sea; the Peloponnese, on mainland Greece, blends walking and ancient sites. If you are hesitating, our guide to choosing the Greek island that suits you will help you decide according to your wishes in landscapes, flavours and atmosphere.
Where can you find a walking map or itinerary for Greece?
To prepare on your own, the most reliable Greek walking maps are those from the Anavasi and Terrain publishers, available by region and by island. But that is precisely what our self-guided trips spare you: you receive detailed route notes, with the itineraries scouted metre by metre and a guidance app, without having to buy or decipher a single map. You follow the path, we take care of the rest.
Do you need to be a seasoned walker to set off?
Not at all. Our trips are covered at your own pace: the walking days last a few hours, punctuated by pauses, a lunch in the shade and a swim. The paths are gentle, chosen for their beauty more than for their length, and accessible even if you have never walked much. Reckon in general on a good week to a dozen days depending on the region, time enough to enjoy yourself without ever rushing.
