Welcome and transfer from the airport to your hotel in the heart of Chania. The most elegant of Cretan towns is yours for a first evening of discovery: the illuminated Venetian harbour, the cobbled lanes of the historic quarter, the shaded terraces where you order a raki by way of welcome. Take your time to wander, to breathe in the scents of the covered market, to settle into the Cretan rhythm. Night in Chania.
Picture this: a Greek coffee served on a terrace facing the turquoise bay of Loutro, a village of white houses reached only on foot or by sea. The breeze carries the scent of wild thyme, and the day stretches out before you, unhurried, at your own pace. This is how Crete reveals itself with Kelifos: eight days of immersion between shore and mountain, where every path leads to a reward, a secret cove for a swim, a family taverna where they serve the morning's catch, an ancient site slumbering beneath the oleanders.
This self-guided walking holiday follows a thread between Chania, the Venetian jewel of northwest Crete, and the unspoilt villages of the southern coast. You wander from cove to cove, gorge to plateau, past the Graeco-Roman remains of Lissos, the spectacular Samaria Gorge and the tiny port of Loutro, accessible only by sea or along a coastal path. Kelifos has designed this itinerary so that pleasure always comes first: charming addresses chosen for their authenticity, stages planned to alternate walking, swimming and leisurely exploration, and a complete travel pack so you can stride ahead with total peace of mind.

Itinerary

Program
Regular bus to Paleochora, an authentic seaside resort on the southwest coast. A free day to settle in: a long sandy beach inviting a first swim, a stroll up to the ruins of Castello Selino, a fortress built by the Venetians in 1279 and perched above the village. In the evening, you choose your taverna on the seafront, between grilled fish and sun-drenched Cretan salad. Night in Paleochora.
The coastal path rises gently above the sea, reaches a plateau fragrant with sage and thyme, then descends through a shaded gorge to the ancient site of Lissos. Here, among Graeco-Roman ruins and lush vegetation, an emerald cove awaits, a sheltered spot reached only on foot or by sea. The walk continues through the narrow, cool gorges of Selinou before reaching the peaceful village of Sougia and its long pebble beach. A swim and dinner by the water. Night in Sougia.
A day of choices, depending on your mood. The path ascends the Agia Irini Gorge, a wilder, more intimate haven than its famous neighbours: centuries-old plane trees, oleanders in bloom, streams murmuring between the rocks. As you climb, light filters through the canopy and birdsong keeps you company. The arrival on the Omalos plateau, a vast pastoral expanse ringed by mountains, brings a striking change of scenery, here the sea seems to belong to another world. Dinner and night at Omalos, in a warm mountain hotel.
A short transfer to the entrance of Samaria Gorge, a UNESCO-listed site and Europe's longest gorge. The gradual descent reveals soaring walls, narrow passages where the rock seems to close in, fragrant groves of endemic cypresses. The trail descends gently for fifteen kilometres, with no technical difficulty, to the village of Agia Roumeli on the shore of the Libyan Sea. Your reward awaits at the finish: a long swim in crystal-clear waters, then an evening with your feet in the sand. Night in Agia Roumeli.
The most beautiful walk of the trip follows the south coast of Crete, between sky and Libyan Sea. You pass the chapel of Agios Pavlos, a small 12th-century sanctuary facing the open sea, then the turquoise waters of Likos invite you to a swim on a beach of white marble slabs. The path winds on past the ancient port of Phoenix before reaching Loutro: a village of immaculate white houses, nestled in a sheltered cove, with no road and no cars, reached only by sea or on foot. You set down your things, settle on a terrace facing the bay, and time stands still. Night in Loutro.
A free morning in Loutro to enjoy this timeless village one last time: coffee on a terrace, a morning swim, a wander through the white lanes. Then the boat takes you to Hora Sfakion, from where the bus returns you to Chania. The evening is free to revisit your favourite spots or discover new ones in the lively lanes of the old harbour. Night in Chania.
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Chania airport. You leave with the taste of mountain honey, the light of the Libyan Sea, and perhaps the desire to return and explore other Greek shores.

— We are very happy with the itinerary and with the hike itself, which crosses magnificent landscapes and offers various options to take shortcuts by boat at certain points. The hotels chosen are good and comfortable, except the one in Omalos, which is now dated and not very well maintained (we had stayed there in 2013 and nothing has changed). Everywhere the reception and service staff were friendly, warm, efficient, and full of good advice.

— Beautiful nature trek with good hotels, charming hosts, magnificent scenery. But too many people at Samaria and a bit of a struggle to set off early (breakfast served at 8 a.m.) when it's very hot.
