Walking holidays in Greece in June

In June, Greece steps into its full light. Temperatures climb between 25 and 30 degrees, rewarding early risers with paths bathed in low-angled light and soothing silence. After the walk, the sea is at last warm enough for a proper swim: that is the luxury of Crete and the Cyclades in early summer.

Why a walking holiday in Greece in June?

June marks the transition between the flowery spring and the heat of summer. Mornings are still fresh, ideal for walking along coasts or through gorges, while afternoons invite a swim in crystal-clear coves. Days are the longest of the year, offering hours of golden light in late afternoon, perfect for a wander through village lanes or a drink on a terrace overlooking the sea.

The vegetation takes on its summer hues: the maquis is fragrant with rosemary and oregano, caper flowers bloom on the walls, and bougainvillea explodes in colour against whitewashed facades. June is a month when Greece is lived entirely outdoors, between fragrant paths and soft evenings that stretch until nightfall.

Our walking destinations in June

Crete is superb in June. Its great gorges, accessible since spring, offer welcome coolness: you walk between walls hundreds of metres high, to the murmur of a stream, before emerging onto a pebble beach on the Libyan Sea. In the evening, mountain villages serve herb-roasted lamb and homemade raki with Cretan generosity.

The Cyclades in June are enchanting. Cafe terraces come alive in the late afternoon, coastal paths offer vistas over turquoise waters, and each island keeps its own character. The first watermelons appear at the stalls, and you dine al fresco by lamplight.

The Dodecanese reveals lesser-known but equally captivating islands in June. Mule tracks cross hills clad in pines and evergreen oaks, lead to isolated monasteries and open onto panoramas where the deep blue of the Aegean mingles with the nearby Turkish coast.
