Walking holidays in Greece in October

October is Greece's best-kept secret. Temperatures hover between 20 and 25 degrees, the light takes on a golden, oblique quality that elevates every landscape, and the olive trees begin to yield their fruit. This is the month of intimacy rediscovered, when Crete and the Peloponnese are explored in absolute serenity.

Why a walking holiday in Greece in October?

October is a month of gentleness and abundance. Temperatures are ideal for walking all day long, the sea remains warm enough for swimming until the end of the month, and the Greek countryside lives to the rhythm of the harvest. Olives, grapes, pomegranates, quinces: the markets overflow with produce that appears on your plate that very evening, prepared with the simplicity that is the greatness of Greek cuisine.

Archaeological sites recover their calm. You visit Delphi, Mycenae or Knossos in a contemplative atmosphere, with time to sit on a sun-warmed stone and let your imagination wander. Village museums, often closed in summer, reopen their doors and tell the story of these lands through everyday objects, agricultural tools and old photographs.

Our walking destinations in October

Crete is sumptuous in October. Olive groves rustle with the first picking, gorges offer walks in pleasant coolness, and the southern beaches are nearly deserted. This is the time to taste fresh olive oil, pressed just days before, with a simple piece of bread and a pinch of salt. Mountain villages, such as those of the White Mountains, welcome walkers with that Cretan hospitality that never falters.

The Peloponnese reveals itself in all its depth in October. The paths of the Mani, lined with medieval towers and Byzantine churches, lead to wild coves where swimming is still a pleasure. The vineyards of Nemea have finished their harvest, and the cellars offer the first wines of the year in a convivial atmosphere.

The Ionian Islands enjoy a particularly gentle October. Corfu, beneath its centuries-old olive trees, offers walks between colourfully-fronted villages and secret coves. The first autumn rains revive the vegetation and give the island that intensity of colour which sets it apart from the rest of Greece.
