September is the month when Greece dresses in golden light. Temperatures ease back to between 25 and 29 degrees, the sea reaches its warmest, and the vines are heavy with ripe grapes across the Peloponnese. Why a walking holiday in Greece in September?

September offers a rare balance between warmth and comfort. Days are still long and luminous, but the fierce heat of summer has softened. You can walk from morning to evening without constraint, pause for a swim in a sea that has stored all the warmth of summer, and dine on a terrace under a starlit sky of absolute clarity.

It is also the month of the grape harvest and the first autumn picking. The vineyards of the Peloponnese and Santorini hum with activity, the figs are at their peak, and the first pomegranates appear at the stalls. Village life recovers an intimacy that summer had put on pause: tavernas resume their routines, artisans reopen their workshops, and you meet more locals than visitors.

The Peloponnese is magnificent in September. Olive groves take on silvery tones in the late-afternoon light, the Byzantine fortresses of Mystras or Monemvasia are visited in perfect gentleness, and the coastal paths of the Mani offer vistas over a deep blue sea. You alternate effortlessly between heritage, walking and swimming.

Crete recovers all its serenity in September. Gorges, highland plateaux and coastal paths are once again places of calm and beauty. The vineyards around Heraklion celebrate the harvest, and family cellars happily open their doors for an impromptu tasting.

The Cyclades in September keep their brilliance while returning to their natural rhythm. The paths of Naxos cross vine-laden terraces, those of Paros run along coves where you are often alone, and the sunsets take on that amber hue that only early autumn can offer.

—  These are some really beautiful hikes, but June 10–19 is a little too late in the season because of the heat. For most of the hikes, it’s impossible to set out early due to bus schedules and breakfast times at the hotels.
