May brings together every advantage: the warmth is pleasant without being heavy, days stretch generously, and Greek nature reaches its springtime peak. Wheat fields ripple between dry-stone walls, fig trees unfurl their first leaves, and monastery gardens are fragrant with rose and jasmine. You walk in rare comfort, with the chance to end each day with a swim in a sea that is already welcoming.

It is also a month when Greece lives to the rhythm of its local festivals. The panegyria (patron-saint celebrations) bring villagers together around long tables, traditional music and communal cooking. Crossing one of these celebrations during a walk turns a simple trip into a treasured memory.

Naxos, the greenest of the Cyclades, is at its peak in May. Its back roads lead from mountain villages to fertile valleys, between Venetian towers and Byzantine chapels. You stop to taste local goat's cheese at a producer's, push open the door of an artisan pottery, let curiosity be your guide.

Crete offers remarkable walking conditions in May. The gorges are accessible, the high plateaux in bloom, and temperatures allow you to walk at any hour. In the evening, tavernas in the small southern ports serve the catch of the day, grilled and accompanied by garden vegetables and a glass of white wine from Sitia.

The Ionian Islands charm with their lush vegetation: slender cypresses, centuries-old olive trees and secret beaches bordered by white cliffs. May is the perfect time to explore Corfu or Kefalonia on foot, between emerald forests and villages with Venetian facades.
