July in Greece means light at its zenith and island life in all its splendour. Temperatures reach 28 to 33 degrees, but the meltemi, that northern breeze sweeping across the Cyclades, refreshes the paths and terraces with welcome regularity. You set off at dawn, when the villages are barely stirring, and return in time for a swim and a siesta.

July calls for a different rhythm, and that is precisely its charm. Walks are concentrated in the early hours, when the light is low and the paths still cool. You walk two to four hours in the morning, then the rest of the day belongs to pleasure: a deserted cove for swimming, lunch in the shade of a plane tree, an archaeological site visit in the mildness of evening.
This morning rhythm offers a rare privilege: seeing Greece in its most beautiful light, that of dawn, when chapels stand in silhouette against a pink horizon and paved paths glisten with dew. The meltemi, rising late morning, then accompanies the return and keeps village terraces perfectly pleasant.
The Cyclades are the quintessential July destination. The meltemi tempers the heat and lends the landscapes that characteristic clarity. The paths of Tinos, dotted with sculpted dovecotes, those of Sifnos with its hilltop monasteries, or the ridge trails of Amorgos offer memorable morning walks. In the afternoon, you surrender to island slow living: an iced ouzo facing the sunset, a dinner of grilled fish with sand between your toes.
The Saronic Islands, close to Athens, make a tempting alternative. Hydra, car-free, is explored exclusively on foot: its paths lead to secluded coves and silent monasteries. Spetses and Poros offer coastal walks bordered by umbrella pines, with the sea always as a backdrop.
For those who prefer altitude, Epirus and its Zagori villages offer welcome mountain freshness. Ottoman stone bridges, beech forests and the deep Vikos Gorge compose a striking landscape, away from the coastal heat.

— great trip... the sites are very well signposted... no problem following a hike... we were even able to enjoy the sea... except in Milos... but we still found the maps very precise.
